Anyone who has had the privilege of working in economic development in the State of Florida during the last three decades probably knows Roger Miller.  He has worked every corner of the state, and he is regarded as one of the most knowledgeable experts on economic development in Florida. His expertise with Florida’s incentives has been a godsend for many local (and regional!) economic developers working to close deals in the state.

Roger has announced his retirement after 28 years of selfless service to the state and Northwest Florida region.  His last day with Florida’s Great Northwest will be Friday, March 9th.  He and his wife, Donna, plan to spend more time in their western North Carolina second home, which ironically is the state from which I moved when I joined Florida’s Great Northwest in January 2011.

During my first several months on the job, I traveled a great deal within Northwest Florida, trying to learn as much as possible about the 16-county region that Florida’s Great Northwest represents.  Without exception, as I met with local economic developers and other community leaders, I found a universal respect, bordering on reverence, for Roger.  “Professional,” “dedicated,” “highest integrity,” and “great guy” were among the terms used to describe Roger.  And our colleagues at FGNW described him in the same manner.

Roger joined the Florida Department of Commerce in February 1984; he served in various positions in the Bureau of Industry Development and was Supervisor for National Marketing from 1988 to 1994.  He joined Enterprise Florida, the public-private successor organization, in 1996 as Director for North American Recruitment in the Expansion, Retention and Recruitment group.  He joined Florida’s Great Northwest in 2007 after his “first” retirement from Enterprise Florida.

In addition to his service to Florida’s Great Northwest, Roger is a member of the boards of directors of Opportunity Florida and the Economic Development Council of Tallahassee/Leon County.  In recognition of his service to the Florida economic development community, he was awarded the Eunice Sullivan Economic Development Professional of the Year award in 2007 by the Florida Economic Development Council.

In summary, Roger is the consummate economic developer—professional, knowledgeable, likable, and highly respected by all who know him.  Perhaps most importantly, he has a passion to help—to help the state and region he calls home, but also the people whose lives are positively impacted by employment in the many companies that Roger helped recruit to Florida during his distinguished economic development career.

We will miss Roger’s dedicated service to Florida’s Great Northwest and our region, but we wish Roger, Donna and their family all the best in retirement.  They deserve it.

Don Kirkman, President

Roger I hope I'm not too late to offer my sincere congratulations on your retirement. You can kind of fool yourself as time races by when the folks you started with are all around working alongside you, but its moments like these when it hits you that, hey, so many I started with are doing other things now. So it's sad for me to see such a familiar face move on...but what a great set up to move on to! A cabin in NC sounds a lot like heaven! I sure do hope you stay in contact. I appreciate your advice and patience through the years from Commerce to EFI to FGNW, especially your stories(!)---I think you need to write a book on the tales of economic development although it might get some folks in trouble! : ) All the best to you---our day to day loss is Donna, Derek, Chad and the grandkids gain! Congratulations, again----you can drive all around and across Florida from one end to the other and see the fruits of your labor---that has got to be a very satisfying feeling. You'll be missed! After Paris I knew you would retire before the next Paris Air Show, but i didn't know you didn't want to go to Farnborough either!!! You will be missed my friend. You have accomplished more in NW Florida AFTER your first retirement than most will accomplish in their entire ED careers. And thank you for trying to explain Florida economic develompment to me. I'm sorry that it never sunk in:) But at least you tried.. Enjoy the mountains. you deserve it!

Happy Trails "old man" , we are truly losing a legend in Economic Development not just for NWF but also the State. Take care, and send me some snow from your cabin.

Best Wishes, Shannon

Roger,

Congratulations on retirement! You will most definitely be missed. I will always remember your patience and willingness to mentor me during my time with EFI. I hope you will write a book in your retirement filled with the illustrative stories of your ED experiences. You always had a story for every question I would ask.

Thanks again for all you have done for fellow economic developers and for your state!

May God bless you and your family,
Marc

Roger, I can't imagine navigating the waters of economic development without you at the helm. You have been such an inspiration during my short time in this industry. Your calm, witty demeanor and sraightforward way of describing the assets of the region have been a great lesson for me. Your are so highly respected in the consultant world - we can't enter a meeting without you..."Where's Roger?....How's Roger? ..... You mean Roger is not with you?" TREMENDOUS respect, as there should be. I am going to miss working with and learning from you. Thank you for all you have done to pave the way for Florida and particularly northwest Florida.

Roger is simply a class act. He is unselfish and always willing to help anyone, any county and always with a smile. His depth of knowledge will be surely missed. Keep us in your thoughts Roger as you watch the sun set over the mountains of N.C. Thank you for all you have done me.

Roger,

As a newcomer, you have been a great resource for me both professionally and personally in my transition. You are respected far beyond Florida's borders. Good luck in your retirement and come see us in Port St. Joe!

Roger, I don't recall telling you, but I know I have told others that you have been an example of the consummate professional and I view you as a mentor. It was many years ago, when you would help and support some upstart economic developers out of Atlanta, and work with my entire team to help careers grow and flourish. The selflessness you exhibited and the role model you are, set the bar for us all. I will never forget.

Roger, I had planned to call you soon anyway before reading today, February 26, of your retirement March 9 and will try to do so before March 9. I've known you now for 25 years and you have been a pleasure to know and work with, a quintessential professional, and a big reason we, together, were able to successfully land Family Dollar Stores' nearly 1 million-square foot, 400-worker distribution center in Marianna, FL, the largest project to locate in the region in many years at that time and as their site-selection consultant for 8 of their 10 DCs, I couldn't have done it without you, your guidance, and your expertise and enjoying our time together on that big project -- Governor Jeb Bush's Project of the Year 2004 -- along with Bill Stanton. I enjoyed your personally hosting me and Maureen in October, 2008, our last time together the last time among several times I was invited to the great Florida's Great Northwest Consultants Event. Enjoy your retirement, you've earned it, and hopefully we will talk again before you hang 'em up in less than 2 weeks.

My warm regards always,

Roger, you will surely be missed! I am so excited for you and your family that you are embarking on this new journey. I have a feeling that retirement will agree with you, but I know that you will miss all of us too.

Thank you so much for all of your patience, mentoring, and advice! FGNW is going to have a tough time finding someone to fill your shoes!

Best wishes,
Scarlett
