Overview

  • Tallahassee, the state capitol of Florida, is located in Leon County. Tallahassee is home to Florida State University and Florida A&M University, as well as several world-class university research centers, including the Center for Advanced Power Systems, the High Magnetic Materials Institute, and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
  • Leon County’s transportation infrastructure includes the Tallahassee Regional Airport, CSX rail, and Interstate 10 - the southernmost east-west Interstate in the United States, which traverses the county. The Tallahassee MSA includes Leon County and three surrounding counties—Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla.
  • Due in part to the number of university graduates who choose to remain in Tallahassee, Leon County’s workforce is typically younger, highly skilled, and better educated than comparably sized cities. The county has a diverse mix of industrial, commercial, and service employers, and numerous sites, business parks, and buildings are available throughout the county.

Data Sources and Calculations

Industry Data
In order to capture a complete picture of industry employment, EMSI basically combines covered employment data from Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) produced by the Department of Labor with total employment data in Regional Economic Information System (REIS) published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), augmented with County Business Patterns (CBP) and Nonemployer Statistics (NES) published by the U.S. Census Bureau. Projections are based on the latest available EMSI industry data, 15-year past local trends in each industry, growth rates in statewide and (where available) sub-state area industry projections published by individual state agencies, and (in part) growth rates in national projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
